Why The 1413 Ledger Exists

FROM THE EDITOR -

I’ve always had something to say. Sometimes it’s about sports. Sometimes it’s about a movie I just watched, a television show I can’t stop thinking about, or a debate that somehow turns into a two-hour conversation.

And sometimes it has nothing to do with any of that. Sometimes it’s about life. Ambition. Creativity. Perspective. The things we’re trying to figure out while we’re figuring ourselves out.

For the longest time, all of those interests existed in different places. But I never really understood why they had to.

That’s where The 1413 Ledger comes from. Not because the world needed another person giving their opinion on the internet. There’s certainly no shortage of those.

I wanted to build a place for conversation. A place where I could write about the things I genuinely care about without forcing myself into one category. Because that’s how I’ve always experienced the world.

I can spend one day arguing about the greatest basketball players of all time and the next wondering why a movie from twenty years ago still means something to us. I can question where the game of basketball is headed.

Rank my favorite television shows. Revisit a moment in sports history.

Write about taking chances, getting older, chasing something you don’t know you’ll ever reach, or simply trying to understand life a little better.

To me, those conversations belong together. Because underneath all of them is the same thing: Perspective.

Two people can watch the same game and see something completely different.

They can watch the same movie and walk away with completely different interpretations.

They can experience similar moments in life and learn completely different lessons from them.

That’s what makes conversation interesting.

And that’s what I want The Ledger to be about.

There will be rankings. There will be opinions.

There will be stories, debates, reviews, retrospectives and probably a few takes that make somebody ask what the hell I was thinking.

Good.

That’s part of the fun. I don’t want The 1413 Ledger to be a place where I write something, you read it, and that’s the end of it.

I want you to disagree. I want you to make your case. Send the article to somebody who would argue with it.

Tell me what I missed. Tell me what you saw differently. Because the goal of The Ledger isn’t to have the definitive answer.

It’s to offer a perspective worth considering and give you a place to offer yours.

Some pieces will be serious. Some will just be fun. Some might make you think. Others might start an argument in the group chat. If they do any of those things, then this place is doing exactly what I hoped it would.

So this is Issue 000. The first entry.

I don’t know exactly what The 1413 Ledger will become. And I think that’s part of what excites me about it.

We’ll figure that out along the way. For now, there’s only one thing left to do.

Read something.

Think something.

Say something.

Welcome to The 1413 Ledger.

Something worth talking about.
